Why a New Theater in Bloomington? Why Now?

New theater. Same town. Here we go.

After the Storm is launching their first show, “Constellations” by Nick Payne, February 19-22 at the Waldron Firebay. To help fund this show, they’ve launched a kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/atsbloomington/after-the-storm-presents-constellations). Tickets are on sale now at afterthestormproductions.com.

In a town full of theater opportunities, why another one? Bill Goveia and Emily Bedwell know that is a question that will be asked when they talk about their new venture, After the Storm Productions (afterthestormproductions.com).

After the Storm was born out of a vision and a desire to use theater in a unique way – to help face, deal with, and move through the various kinds of trauma that life throws at you. Goveia said, “Almost every artist I have ever talked to has a story about how their art has helped them through something – visual artists, performers, and especially theatre artists. Over the course of the past few years, several of us in the theatre have come to realize that we’ve all survived trauma, and that in almost every case, theatre has been part of the recovery. This company is an attempt to catch that lightning in a bottle. The process is tailored to that mission.”

With a focused vision for their company, Goveia and Bedwell knew it wouldn’t be fair to other theatre organizations to shoe-horn their mission into already-existing successful companies.

“When we talk about Community, the use of the capital C is intentional,” says Bedwell. “The south-central Indiana theater family continues to go beyond expectations. Whether you see a show being produced by Constellation Stage & Screen, Jewish Theater of Bloomington, Monroe County Civic Theater, Off Night Productions, Eclipse Productions, Fourth Wall, or even farther afield (Brown County Playhouse, Merry MAC players, Owen County Civic Theatre, Little Theatre of Bedford, and more), we are all part of the same theater family. Each company is a unique piece of the puzzle that makes up the Community theater in our part of Indiana.”
